$23,400 OTF Grant Hits the Spot for the Wiarton and District Curling Club

May 11, 2023

WIARTON – On May 5th, MPP Rick Byers met with the team at the Wiarton and District Curling Club to formally congratulate them on the work done over the last year, thanks to a $23,400 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Joining MPP Byers for the event was OTF volunteer Hugh Wilson. The Resilient Communities Fund grant program was designed by OTF to help non-profits rebuild and recover from the impacts created by the pandemic and keep moving forward.

“It was my pleasure to participate in helping the Wiarton and District Curling Club celebrate their Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant. The organization is very important in supporting sport in the community.” MPP Rick Byers, Bruce Grey Owen Sound.

Funds from the grant, which was awarded in the spring of 2022, have been used by the Club to accomplish several key tasks, including new condenser fans, curling equipment and new tables for the club room. In addition, the grant helped with the purchase of two outdoor message boards to promote events and activities happening at the club.

The Club appreciates the support of the OTF, especially after a few challenging post-pandemic years. This grant has allowed it to make improvements that allowed to continue to build on its membership, programs and rentals.

The Wiarton Curling operates in a community that has few organized winter activities and curling is a physical and social activity that keeps people active. The Club has programs for junior curlers, school groups, Community Living and rural curlers. In addition, it hosts bonspiels that raise money for local charities (Hospital foundation, Alzheimer Society).

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations celebrates 40 years of grant-making in Ontario and making a lasting impact in communities. Last year, OTF invested over $110M into 1,022 community projects and partnerships, which included funding for the Government of Ontario’s Community Building Fund. Visit otf.ca to learn more.
