Durham Curling Club is putting its OTF Grant to Work for Local Curlers
January 26, 2024
DURHAM – On Friday, January 26, MPP Rick Byers stopped in to meet with members of the Durham Curling Club to celebrate the work happening as a result of receiving a $150,000 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Since receiving the grant last Fall, it’s been used to cement the floor under the ice surface. The new cement floor will also allow the space to be used year-round.
“Congratulations to the Durham Curling Club on receiving this support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport. It is great to see these funds being used so well in the community and for the benefit of all your members.” MPP Rick Byers, Bruce Grey Owen Sound.
When not in use for curling, the space will be available for use for pickleball, cornhole, ball hockey, or several other activities that will promote health and wellness in West Grey.
The process of cementing the floor, which was previously sand with exposed piping, included leveling of the ground, replacing headers in the floor, as well as the moving and burial of pipes and plumbing. This extensive project would not have been possible for the Durham Curling Club without this Capital grant and the Club members were happy to say the works now completed.
“It has been a goal to make the curling arena a usable space for our community year-round,” said John Nixon, President of the Durham Curling Club. “Thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, we look forward to organizing events and welcoming community groups to use this space for years to come”.
The Durham Curling Club has members ranging from ages eight to 80 of various skill levels. New members are always welcome. We also rent our meeting, kitchen, and bar area to individuals, families, and community groups, and beginning in April our new event space will also be available. If you are interested in joining us for curling, or renting out space, you can find out more at www.durhamcurlingclub.ca.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s (OTF) mission is to build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario.
